The Sound Of Laughter
(Peter Kay)
Peter Kay's unerring gift for observing the absurdities and eccentricities of family life has earned himself a widespread, everyman appeal. These vivid observations coupled with a kind of nostalgia that never fails to grab his audience's shared understanding, have earned him comparisons with Alan Bennett and Ronnie Barker. In his award winning TV series', he creates worlds populated by degenerate, bitter, useless, endearing and always recognisable characters which have attracted a huge and loyal following. In many ways, he's an old fashioned kind of comedian and the scope and enormity of his fanbase reflects this. He doesn't tell jokes about politics or sex, but rather rejoices in the far funnier areas of life: elderly relatives and answering machines, dads dancing badly at weddings, garlic bread and cheesecake, your mum's HRT...His autobiography is full of this kind of humour and nostalgia, beginning with Kay's first ever driving lesson, taking him back through his Bolton childhood, the numerous jobs he held after school and leading up until the time he passed his driving test and found fame. This was definitely the funniest book I have ever read. Kay tells the story in his own words as if telling it while on stage. Highly recommended!! Reading this book makes me realise Peter Kay is human and has the same faults and background as us normal folk. I don't think this was addictive reading as his other writings, but more a catalyst for them. But that said I did enjoy it and the humour and wit un-wavering. I do feel at times his humour a mask to hide behind but then who will ever really know Peter Kay. I felt a little anxious that the story stopped leaving me on the edge of nothingness, it would be nice to read the behind the scenes of ones popularity. But I suppose that's the reason for his next works! All in all a genuine read not as entertaining, but good, so go out and buy it because its better to read it than not. His talent clearly lays within the stage and mic brigade and not in literature status.
