In The Name Of Honour
(Mukhtaran Bibi)

Publicidade
Having lived in a city like Mumbai all my life I take some very important things for granted especially freedom and security. After reading Mukhtaran Mai?s story I realized how grateful I should be for where I am and the opportunities life has presented.Mukhtaran Bibi was gang raped in the province of Punjab in 2002. Reason ? her younger brother who was 12 years old was accused of romancing a woman (who was in her late twenties!) from an upper caste tribe. For this horrific crime, the village council decides it would only be fair and appropriate that Mukhtaran Bibi be gang raped for her brother?s crime. Under normal circumstances the woman commits suicide out of shame. But not Mukhtaran Bibi. Something kept her going. She was suddenly filled with anger and a determination to seek justice.I cannot even imagine what she must have gone through at that point. It?s terrifying that people think sacrificing women is only natural in today?s day and age.I was aghast when I learnt that she had absolutely no clue that there existed a law and a constitution and she could fight back. A chance article in the local paper became worldwide news and help poured in from all corners of the world. She lived in fear for so many years. The rapists lived just across the field and they were still roaming scot-free. While she was fighting the battle of her life a chance encounter with Naseem, a lawyer, gives Mukhtaran a renewed sense of hope. Naseem fought with Mukhtaran as if this was her own battle and is helping her in her endeavors even today.Even though she was experiencing a range of emotions, Mai was still thinking clearly. She realized women were treated like this only because of lack of education. The problem had to be stemmed at the root. So with all the money she received from various institutions like Amnesty International, the Canadian Government etc. Mai started a school to educate the children, especially the girls in her village. In the end justice prevailed. But what was truly amazing is the courage and determination Mai has shown through her long and hard journey. Mukhtaran Mai is a true hero. I have encouraged everyone I know to read her book. She has touched my life as I am sure she has touched many others.
