Rendezvous With Rama
(Arthur C. Clark)

Publicidade
?Rendezvous with Rama? makes an extremely critical point that is often hard to explore outside of fiction; we may not be that important in the grand scheme of things. The critical events of ?Rendezvous? come about when astronomers spot a large spacecraft heading into the solar system. It is humankind?s first contact with an alien species and an emergency expedition is mounted to land on, enter and explore the ship. They are to learn the ships mission and destroy it if they must. They are successful at finding their way in and have some first rate adventures as the hollow ship turns out to have a wall hugging sea and a predilection for three legged design that would seem to suggest three legged designers and countless objects beyond the understanding of men. There is titillating excitement as the ship wakes up around its weary explorers as it nears the sun. By the time the crew is forced to escape however and the ship rounds the sun and rockets itself into the darkness of interstellar space, everyone has realized one important thing. ?They? did not come for us. They came on a mission of their own and we were small, almost unnoticeable interlopers. At the end of ?Rendezvous? we do not even know who they are. The book is Clark?s lesson in humility. There is no reason to think the first aliens we encounter will know or care that we are here. The writing is typical Clark. The science is dead on, the point is clear, but the character development leaves a little something to be desired. This is a good book on the exploration of space and the nature of things in space from gravity to aliens but is not going to warm your heart with any good human stories.
