Beartice Doesn't Want To

A library book about learning to like library books, what to be better. ?Beatrice Doesn?t Want To? follows a young, girl dog character to the library three days in a row with her brother Henry as he tries to work on a report. She, as the title suggests, doesn?t want to go.The plot is extremely simple and targeted at young children. Each day that Henry takes Beatrice to the library she protests that she doesn?t want to and then makes a pest of herself as he tries to do his work. Much of this doesn?t actually appear in the writing but is conveyed through pictures of Beatrice pulling his tail or getting her nose between him and the page. On the third day, Henry leaves Beatrice in a reading group where the librarian reads a book that Beatrice finds very funny. In this way she learns to like to read and then doesn?t want to leave the library. What makes this book work are the pictures. We see the haughty, frustrating expressions of a young girl and the exasperation of her older brother clearly on the faces of the dogs and the backgrounds are pleasant watercolors. It is funny and enjoyable. The writing is very simple and should be readable by any first grader although my daughter, who is a second grader still, enjoys reading the book, especially the part where the child gets to yell out, ?I don?t want to!? as loud as she can. Some things you never outgrow I guess. While not my favorite all time children?s book, and seemingly without deeper meaning ?Beatrice Doesn?t Want To? is a good home or library reading book for young children. It is fun and a regular part of my household?s reading routine, even if ?I don?t want to!?
