Skippyjonjones
(Judy Schachner)
?Skippyjonjones? is a delightful book for children of all ages! It is the story of a young Siamese cat who is sent to his room by his mother for pretending to be a bird. There he has a fun and fantastic imaginary adventure with the toys other goodies found in his closet. He imagines himself, not as the cat Skippyjonjones but instead as a chihuahua named ?Skippito Friskito.? As Fistkito, Skippyjonjones joins a group of chihuahua?s in his closet to battle ?Alfredo Buzzito, El Blimpo Bumblebeeto Bandito? who is of course trying to steal the chihuahua?s frijoles. After a fiesta, a siesta and other nonsense the story reaches its climax as Skippyjonjones brings Bumbleeto crashing to the ground and we learn that he was actually a bumblebee shaped piñata that is now broken, spilling jellybeans everywhere. The chihuhauas who are actually toys are delighted. The game ends as Skippy?s mother, ?Mama Junebug Jones? shows up with Spippyjonjone?s sistersAs wonderful as the story is, what makes this book work is the tremendous ingenuity Schachner uses in the naming conventions and rhythmic devices. There are Chihuahuas named ?Poquito Tito? and ?Pintolito? and a delightful interwoven rhyme scheme that is not easily compared to anything this abstractor has read. A fair portion of the story is rhymes made up by Skippy or songs sung by the dogs. They are very funny and more than a little bit brilliant. My eight year old daughter claps and sings along. The art work is fun and affectionate with a softness that makes the story all the more inviting. Overall, ?SkippyjonJones? is a lyrical treat, appropriate for early readers through the age of ten. It is a learning tool in that it is rhythmic and lyrical but is mostly just plain fun for everyone. A plus!
