Priest Amaro's Crime
(Eça De Queiróz)
The romance violentely criticizes the provincian life and the behaviour of the Clergy of Portugal and Brazil. Amaro and Amélia are the central characters. He is the son of the Marquis of Valença's servants. Loosing his parents at a very young age, he is raised by the servantry and becomes a liar. The Marchioness decides that he should become a priest and at the age of fifteen he is sent to the seminar. He was weak both phisicaly and emotionaly. The environment at the Marchioness' house molded his character. He acepts priesthood passively due to the influence of the Count of Ribamar and obtain the parish of Leiria. He lodges at the S. Joaneira House and there he meets Amélia the is the tall desirable daughter of his hostess. The girl has a very sentimental, romantic and strongly sensualtemperament. She is orphan of father and her mother is CanonDias' lover and is a simple and passive devote atracted to the catholic ritual. She had a very basic provincial education and is surrouded by canons and priests. Her house is a center of convenience to the powerful and amoral priests of the city where the superficiality of the rituals is imperative and there is a deformation of the cristian religious concepts. In this society religion has an active political power that is used elective monouvers and that gives them social priviliges, prestige and power. Amélia dates João Eduardo that is the registry's scribe, she them meets Priest Amaro, host at her mother's house, new priest of the paroch, and surrenders herhelf to him with total submission and becomes his lover. She gets pregnant and hides in a farm close to the city, acompanied by a fanatic religious woman that is Canon Dias' sister. She recieves a visit of Abbot Ferrão, the only decent priest of the romance. He tries to recover her to a normal and dignified life and wants to take her away from the disastrous influence of Amaro. Nevertheless Amélia and the baby die during childbirth. Amaro now a shameless cinic goes on with his carrer and gets to know his colleague's cinism as well. The author not only exposes the vices of the priests, but also presents the ungrace life of the Portuguese province. In the end it shows how Amaro becomes identical to his colleagues. One conversation between Amaro and Canon Dias shows clearly how Amaro and the other eclesiastics represent the clergy with no vocation and a lot of hipocrisy.
