The Little Book Of Stress Relief
(David Posen M.D.)
Stress is a part of life, both at workplace & at home.Every one in the world, suffers from stressful times, due to one reason or the other.Stress comes from any situation that requires behavioural adjustment. Any change good or bad, is stressful. However, it is caused mainly in controversial situations, when one is helpless, as to what decisions to take. Of course, Stress has some threshold value, above which only, it is harmful. Should we fight it, or run away from the situation? Since we can't get rid of it,we should face it & find ways & means of getting relief from the stress,so that it does not overpower us. Well, the present book in its fifty five Chapters, does precisely the same. One of the methods of getting stress relief is, through the technique of Transcendental Meditation (in short TM), as propounded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The theory behind TM is that, thought waves are made to operate, such that these lead to deep mental relaxation & better mental health, with reduced stress. It can also be considered that, by undergoing TM, a person causes a break in building up of, &/or continuation of stress, even though it is a part of life. Mind is compared to a drunken monkey, or a wild elephant, or a flame wavering in wind. With TM,better mind control & peace of mind are achieved, leading to improved quality of life, i.e. a calmer, happier & healthier you. Meditation can successfully reduce stress levels, if we understand its philosophy & practise it correctly. It is said that comparative medical studies have been done for those practising TM & those not practising TM. It has been found that those practising TM regularly, have less irritation, less anger, lesser problems of blood pressure & heart, & in general better mental & physical health. This abstract writer was initiated into TM in India, sometime in seventies. Thus, as a practitioner of TM for many years, my own experience is that if we want best results, regularity in meditating twice a day is a must. But if time is really such a constraint, then it must be done at least once a day, either in the morning or evening. By practising TM periodically, or even on the day(s)when you have experienced considerable stress in office or at home, some relief can be obtained soon, without medication, leading to better control on the mind & a better environment.
