To Kill A Mockingbird

No Abstract could ever do this book justice no matter how long! Crossed with rock solid characters, dialogue so well written much of it passed unaltered into the movie of the same name and messages the whole world needs to hear, Mockingbird recounts the story of Maycomb, Alabama as it struggles with racism and The Great Depression through the eyes of a young girl Jean Louise ?Scout? Finch. The story starts somewhat slowly as we meet, Atticus Finch a lawyer, Gem and Scout, his children, Dill, Calpernia, Ms. Maudie and a host of others. They are rich and solid and provide a firm foundation for the two streamed plot. The main plot rises as a black man, Tom Robbins is accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. The facts of the case say that Robbins is innocent, and that Mayella?s father Bob Ewell is the culprit, but can Tom get a fair trial in bigoted 1930?s Maycom? While Robbins is found guilty and shot to death by a guard before a retrial can be held, Atticus is redeemed in the eyes of his son and the black community for having taken on the case and struggled so honestly for the truth. The second major plot deals with Boo Radley, the mysterious recluse who lives down the street. The children have built a fearful mystique around this stranger and it isn?t till he saves Jem and Scout from the disgraced Bob Ewell at the very end of the book that his true, gentle nature is revealed, he and Tom are the Mockingbirds, souls so inherently noble their injury becomes a crime.Beautiful, enchanting and powerfully meaningful, Mockingbird fully deserves its place as one of the greatest novels in American literature. It?s not just worth reading, it?s worth rereading many times.
