My affair with this oft ridiculed genre began with Sophie Kinsella?s Confessions of a Shopaholic. The first of a series of hilarious books starring a scatterbrained heroine afflicted with financial diarrhoea. Meet Becky Bloomwood who can?t seem to curb her expenditure. The word sale is enough to send her into a tizzy. Prada, Dior and Chanel are her best friends.But ones she struggles to keep.Because she is stuck to a bland, staid, low paying job at a financial magazine.Also, because there is a mysterious force at play which makes her spend against her best intentions. And she is powerless to resist it. At least that is how she convinces herself as her savings dwindle and overdrafts become the order of the day.The story is a laugh-a-minute description of the misadventures of a financial analyst with no head for finances. How she runs up a huge debt and comes up novel excuses to stave it off, forms the crux of the story. If only Bank Managers were more understanding. Well, Beck does all she can to smooth talk hers and wheedle out of her pile of debts but to no avail. Dejected, she even takes to (horror of horrors) limiting her spending by buying a self-help book, curtailing her primal urges to go linger at fancy shops and what have you.When she sinks to the nadir of her personal and professional life, opportunity strikes in the form of a brand new career. And voila! Not only does she make a success of it, she also manages to snag an eligible bachelor at the same time. Funny, pacy and insightful, Confessions of a Shopoholic is a heavy duty book for light reading!
