A powerful poetic series of stories about Satan (Lucifer), who is seen as a tragic fallen hero, as in John Milton?s Paradise Lost, rather than the evil-doer of The Bible. He had appeared in Neil Gaiman?s Sandman series in this guise, but now Carey and his co-writers have given him his own story. Here, the focus is on Lilith, the vampiric first lover of Adam, who was considered too beautiful and passionate, and cast down favour of Eve. Even now, Lilith is exceedingly powerful. Even angels fall for her charms (she is mostly presented in full naked glory). Worse, when a man or an angel makes love to her, Lilith?s fertility guarantees that she will become pregnant. She has sired a number of angelic-demonic beings. The Archangel Gabriel, who has taken charge since God mysteriously vanished from his creation, decides that Lilith must be destroyed. The situation worsens when one of Lilith?s children, thinking of the protection of his Mother, kills an angel. War between the forces of Good And Evil (if that is what they yet are) seems inevitable. Lucifer leads a rebellion of Angels out of Paradise in protest at the situation, and establishes his own separate kingdom. The divisions that will come into force for the apocalypse are now truly in place. The artwork is gorgeous and often erotic. Women are given full nudity while the naked winged angels are seen as genderless. Nevertheless, Lilith gets herself pregnant to one. The sexual element behind the fall of the fallen angel, Morningstar (Lucifer) is a startling and welcome twist on the legend.
