ABSTRACT - CARLTON, BRONWYN & GROSS, PETER & OTHERS THE BOOK OF FAIRIE ? AUBERON?S TALE 1999 DC Books. A fabulous Graphic novel and related stories about Machiavellian intrigue and treachery in the land of Fairie. When the king of Fairie is manipulated into taking part in a joust with a gladiatorial troll who has never been defeated, the troll accidentally kills the King. The troll, Sturm, finds himself sentenced to death for regicide. He flees. The death of the King creates a huge schism concerning who his rightful successor should be. The Parliament has no desire to be ruled by the natural heir, and they set up a naïve young pretender, Auberon as the new king. Sturm, hoping for clemency under the successor, takes his side instead, and the nation of Fairie is plunged into civil war. Auberon is presented with his father?s sword on the brink of battle. He is dismayed that it is just a steel blade, untouched by magic arts. He hoped for one that could make him invisible or invincible. Auberon unexpectedly wins the war, and the other potential King surrenders to him personally, pledging allegiance to him. He seems honourable after all, but is he? Auberon?s advisors begin to make him unpopular by giving him false advice. Auberon wants to present his close ally Lord Obrey with the sword Auberon won the battle with, as a gesture of his respect for the man?s bravery in the battle. His advisors tel Auberon that the man would be offended by such gestures. Auberon decides to disregard the offer, and Obrey feels slighted by being snubbed and unrewarded. In another story in the collection, a troll on a treasure seeking quest discovers that he serpent in a lake is the treasure, rather than its guardian. The serpent is a beloved pet for the princess who hired him for the quest. In a story about Auberon in the days before he became King, the boy Auberon brings home a stray monster that he has adopted as a friend, just as many boys bring home horrible evil looking dogs. The pet saves Auberon from goblin assassins hiding in his closet. In another fragment (none of the stories seem particularly complete), a fairie demon girl traps a former lover in the body of a falcon, which she hoods and blinds, to keep in her control. Later, a mortal man discovers this, and sets the trapped man free through his own love for the girl. There are great ideas and stories here, but nothing knits together and comes to an ultimate conclusion.
