Changing Minds: The Art And Science Of Changing Our Own And Other People's Minds
(Howard Gardner)
Minds are exceedingly hard to change. Unfortunately, the book stops shortof providing specific tools and techniques for applying his model for changingminds. Nevertheless, a book worth reading for the model presented and reminderthat one must keep both the Mind and ears open to effectively change others. One key tosuccess is the ability to influence people's thinking. In order to changesomeone's mind, Gardner writes, one has to produce a shift in that person'sperceptions, codes and the way he or she retains and accesses information. HowardGardner, a Harvard psychologist who specializes in cognitive theory, offers usinsight into what happens when one changes his or her mind. In order to changesomeone's mind, Gardner writes, one has to produce a shift in that person'sperceptions, codes and the way he or she retains and accesses information. had prettyhigh hopes for the book changing Minds: The Art And Science of Changing Our OwnAnd Other People's Minds by Howard Gardner. Contents: The Contents of the Mind; The Forms of the Mind; The Power of EarlyTheories; Leading a Diverse Population; Leading an Institution - How to Dealwith a Uniform Population; Changing Minds Indirectly - Through ScientificDiscoveries, Scholarly Breakthroughs, and Artistic Creations; Mind Changing ina Formal Setting; Mind Changing Up Close; Changing One's Own Mind; Epilogue -The Future of Mind Changing; Appendix; Notes; Index; About the Author Gardner puts forth his theories of mind change based on three factors... four"entities" of mind change (stories, theories, concepts, and skills),six "arenas" of mind change (from nations down to one's own person),and seven "levers" of mind change (all words that start with"re", like reason, resources, and resonance). He uses a number ofexamples from history to show how ideas and people were able to move othersfrom one mindset to another. And at times, the writing almost succeeded. Gardner's book is full of banal and often incorrectobservations. how to change the minds of Creationists. This again is utterlymistaken and it's clear that Gardner has next to no experience with theinternet. I found the first 50 pages or so to be intriguing, after that itbecame a grind to endure. Gardner makes very indirect references to the impactof the media on the vignettes that he recounts, yet seemingly asserts that theindividuals involved acted in a vacuum. Gardner does not address the lack oftransitional forms, the various "truths" that are allowed to exist, like the stages of the human embryo and the lack ofany new species. The author does have some interesting ideas, yet the simplisticcharacterization of the people or ideas that he analyzes fails to allow us, the readers, to form a realistic idea of theforces acting on them
