This is one of the greatest American adventure stories everwritten, by an author who obviously spent some time at sea. A young schoolteacher wanting a change in his humdrum lifeenlists in a whale hunt. He gets more than he bargained for,as life on board the schooner Pequod is not simply a whalehunt? It is a lifelong search for vengeance by the derangedcaptain Ahab. Ishmael, a young schoolteacher, arrives in New Bedford on acold night in December, and has to share a room with aharpooner, because the inn is full up. The harpooner?s nameis Queequeg, and he is a cannibal from New Zealand, and heand Ishmael become good friends. He tells Ishmael that hisfather is a king and when he dies Queequeg will take hisplace, but first he must travel and bring knowledge back tohis people.Ishmael and Queequeg sign up with captain Peleg one of theowners of the Pequod. His partner Captain Ahab was made lameby a great white whale, which has made him mentallydisturbed. Ishmael feels uneasy about serving three yearswith a captain he has never seen. They meet the rest of thecrew: Starbuck, Stubb, Flask, two other harpooners, Tashtegoand Daggoo. Ahab keeps going below deck to talk to Fedallah,a Phillipine who makes strange predictions.Captain Ahab promises an ounce of gold to the first man tosight a white whale with a crooked jaw, wrinkled forehead,and three harpoons sticking out of his hide, the one calledMoby Dick. Ahab has only one goal?to catch and kill thewhale, but Starbuck opposes him.Ishmael learns all about whaling in general, and Moby Dickin particular. One night Tashtego sights a whale, and foursmaller whale boats are let down from the Pequod. They givechase, but are unsuccessful. The Pequod crushes one of thesmaller boats, but none of the men are injured.They meetanother whaler the Town-Ho which had seen the white whale,then find a giant squid. Shortly afterward they capture asperm whale, and begin the long hard job of cutting it up.While they are doing so a man from the Jeroboam namedGabriel warns Ahab that he is going to die soon.The menthink that Fedallah is the Devil in disguise. They catch aright whale and hang its head on the port side of the shipacross from the sperm whale head for good luck. Tashtegofalls overboard, but Queequeg saves his life.Ahab meets another victim of Moby Dick, captain of theEnderby, who lost an arm to the white whale. The Englishmantries to discourage Ahab from going after the whale, but invain. The whale oil stored in the ship?s hold begins toleak, but Ahab doesn?t care about anything except capturingMoby Dick. Fadallah makes some strange predictions aboutcaptain Ahab, that he will have neither a hearse or coffinand he will see two hearses before his own death, which willbe caused by a rope. Ahab himself is the first to spy thewhite whale, which attacks the Pequod. The whale escapes,and Ahab decides to leave the gold doubloon until the whaleis killed. The next day they spot Moby Dick again, and heupsets two of the small boats. The only fatality isFedallah, who predicted he would predecease Ahab. Finallyall of Fedallah?s strange predictions come true.
