Joe Srednicki One of the most influential evolutionary biologists of the 20th century, perhaps the best known since Charles Darwin was Stephen Jay Gould wrote the book ?Rocks of Ages?. The evolutionary theorist at Harvard University whose research, lectures, and essays helped strengthen the field of paleontology. His book takes me a step closer to the conflict between science and religion. Gould sheds new light on this dilemma that has overwhelmed people since the Renaissance. Creationism and evolution, this topic has been an on going battle for years. Gould uses his head and tries to make you realize there might be some place in the middle science and religion that could put this problem to rest. Instead of choosing between the two, Gould suggests, why not choose a side that agrees with self-respect and dissimilarity to each part. NOMA, which stands for non-overlapping magisterial, is Gould?s outlook on life. NOMA allows science and religion to coexist peacefully in a position of respectful noninterference. Science does a better job of telling us what's happening in the universe, but religion is better at guiding our own hearts. I found this to be no big surprise. This has been said thousands of times over the years. I feel what is taught through adolescences as a child or what experiences influenced you to turn away from or too is what guides your faith. For me, my faith leans on God because I was brought up to believe Jesus died on the cross for me. This is what my life was given and family put in front of me. Others may not have such an influence and turn to other ways of thinking. Gould himself seems to lean more towards skepticism in my eyes. Gould's is a fine science writer although his book reads like a specialized, academic text, rather than something for common readers. It's not that what he says is wrong, or unconvincing, just that it's said in way he understands and is tough for me to grasp all of it. His arguments can be followed, but it's not, generally speaking, the best way to write out his thoughts.
