A Million Pieces
(James Frey)

Publicidade
A million pieces by James Frey As stated in the Readers note of this book, the writer confesses that there were some embellishments to certain aspects of the book. He also admitted candidly that there was some alteration of the truth, which from my point of view is hardly surprising as most books and films tend to have incorrect details. The important message of the novel is, one of survival and the skills that most people are not aware that they pocess. The lesson been learnt here is the the resilience and adaptability of a human being in the face of adversity. This note is for individuals who might have read about the gossip which had denounced the book as a pack of lies. James Frey, a 24 year old man at that point in time, was escorted and dumped unceremoniously on a homeward bound plane by his best friend. At that point in time, he had no front teeth, a gaping leaking hole in his cheek, a broken nose clogged with snot and two bloodshoot eyes. To cap it all, he smelt of urine, dried blood, spit and snot. Unfortunately for the rest of the passengers his smell was a little better than that of a decomposing body. On reaching his destination he was lucky enough to find a flight attendant who was willing to help and direct him to where he should go, because at that point in time he was extremely drunk and spilling his guts all over. Luckily at the end of the long arrival tunnel were his long-suffering parents. It is quite clear that he is a raging alcoholic with a severe substance abuse problem. James clarified that he came from a stable and happy home and had had nothing bad done to him that would have led him into substance abuse, he stated candidly that he started using drugs quite young and mostly because he was bored. Apparently he realized that he has an addictive personality, because when he fell in love and it was over, drinks and drugs were his only consolation. Unfortunately, it was this addiction that had spiraled out of control which led to him been deposited on a flight home back to his parents were willing to help him by putting him in a drug rehab centre. The intriguing aspect of this book was the honesty and the brutality of the journey that he had to take towards sobriety while at the rehab centre. The description of his journey into hell included withdrawal symptoms which were a fairly horrific: the vomiting of blood, the repeated trips to the toilet, or horrible smell of decaying flesh which gushed from his mouth, the corrosive acid from constant regurgitation also gave his mouth a dirty gray which also produced a prutid smell which even overcame him when he was fast asleep. He also described an incident about how he had all his teeth removed without any form of anesthetics, it was quite a horrendous description and one of the highlights of the book. Despite the claim of embellishments it is still a fascinating book to read.
