Peter is an eight year old boy and feeling a bit lonely has a yearning for a cat.When he spots one and runs across the road away from Scotch nanny to try and catch it and hug it, he is hit by a coal lorry and has to go to hospital for atime to recover.
While there, he sleeps and dreams that he has changed into a white cat and both he and the cat he tried to catch are chased from the house. Poor Peter does not know how to behave like a cat,after all, so far in life he has only known about all things boylike. So, how thankful he is to meet up with the sweet, caring Jennie Baldrin,a thin tabby cat with a part white face and throat, a cat among cats, who teaches him how to act and survive as a cat.
