The Count of Monte CristoPrincipal Characters: Edmond Dantes, Fernando, Mondego, MercedesThis story takes place in France, where the young sailor Edmond Dantes aspires to be Captian and marry his girlfriend Mercedes. The action begins when a ship carrying Dantes and his friend Mondego has to go ashore to get medical assistance for their captian, who has fallen ill. They anchor in the Isle of Elba, where Napoleon Bonaparte is exiled. The captian dies, but before they set sail for Marseille, the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte asks Dantes to deliver a secret letter to a friend for him. Even though he doesn't know how to read or write, Dantes fulfills Bonaparte's wish. After arriving in Marseille, France, Dantes is promoted to Captian and becomes engaged to his lover Mercedes. Mondego, an aristocrat who is also in love with Mercedes, becomes very jealous of Edmond's good fortune, and tells the authorities about a supposed conspiracy between Dantes and the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte.Because of this, Dantes is condemned to prison and sent to the Chateau d' If, which is situated on an island, where he spends many years bitter and grieving in isolation.During this terrible isolation, Dantes is at times desperate, and lacks hope until he meets another unfortunate companion, the Abbot Faria. The Abbot Faria ends up being a light at the end of the tunnel for Dantes and is a pivotal factor in Dantes' life. The Abbot teaches him reading, writing, foreign languages, fencing, to understand the trauma that he has been subject to, and to rediscover his life. Before dying, the Abbot reveals a treasure map that will help him to escape prison (after 14 years) and discover a fortune on the Islet of Monte Cristo. With the fortune, Dantes transforms himself into the Count of Monte Cristo, an exotic, charming, and weathly man, and in this way reenters society in disguise. After returning to France, the Count of Monte Cristo gets revenge on all of his enemies and discovers that Mondego (now Count of Morcef) is married to his beloved Mercedes and has a son. His smart and ambitious plan for revenge begins at this point.Notes:In this book, many of the negative aspects of humanity are seen, such as Anger, Jealousy, Vengeance, and Hatred. On the good side (the other side of the coin), the rebirth of a man is seen, with his force of goodwill, the capacity to fight against his bitter feelings, the capacity to struggle to survive prison, the ability of self-transformation as he becomes an adult. I recommend this book by Alexandre Dumas (written in 1845-1846).
