The Count of Monte Cristo is the story of Edmond Dantes, a young man living in the turbulent times of the French monarchy, who was exiled and imprisoned on an island for a crime that he didn?t commit. It was his friend Fernand who set the trap, accusing him of being Bonapartist and stealing his fiancée Mercedes. She was pregnant by the exiled Edmond, so agreed to be with Fernand to avoid rejection as a single mother. The bookkeeper Danglears helped Fernand because he wanted a position as commander of the Pharaon navy. The third person to help with the plot was Villfort, a government official blinded by his ambition and desire to get ahead in his carreer. In prison Edmond meets an Abbot named Faria who gives him all of his academic knowledge. He also tells him the location of a hidden treasure on the Islet of Monte Cristo and they start digging a tunnel to escape. When the Abbot dies, Edmond hides in the tunnel and takes his place, taking advantage of the situation in order to escape.After discovering the treasure that the Abbot had spoken of, Dantes takes the name the Count of Monte Cristo, and returns to French society in disguise in order to get revenge on all of the people who had conspired against him. He starts his revenge by rescuing Mercedes' son Albert from a kidnapping that he himself had arranged with a group of bandits. Through a series of well-planned schemes, the Count exposes Vilfort and drives his wife to suicide after the death of her son. Vilfort goes crazy after his disgrace. Fernand also dies after realizing all that he has done wrong.Danglears is captured by the bandits that had helped Dantes and begs for forgiveness after going hungry for four days. The happy ending consists of the death of a friend and the birth of a happy family: Dantes, Mercedes, and the fruit of their love: Albert.
