More About The Audacity Of Hope
(Barack Obama)
BARACK OBAMAis the junior U.S. senator from Illinoise. There are patriots who opposedthe war in Iraq, and there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq." Itwill have to be constructed from the best of our traditions and will have toaccount for the darker aspects of our past.from The Audacity ofHope In July 2004, Barack Obamaelectrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke toAmericans across the political spectrumNow, in TheAudacity of Hope, Senator Obama calls for a different brand of politics --a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the"endless clash of armies" we see in congress and on the campaigntrail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit atthe heart of "our improbable experiment in democracy." He exploresthose forces -- from the fear of losing to the perpetual need to raise money tothe power of the media -- that can stifle even the best-intentioned politician. He examines the growing economic insecurity of American families, the racialand religious tensions within the body politic, and the transnational threats-- from terrorism to pandemic -- that gather beyond our shores. Portions of the volume read like outtakes from a stump speech, and thebulk of it is devoted to laying out Mr. Obama's policy positions on a host ofissues, from education to health care to the war in Iraq.Instead, it turns the reader's attention to the similarities and commonvalues that Amercians share regardless of their political persuasions. Thefurther you break down an issue, the closer you get to the core values thatunite us, and Senator Barack Obama explains the necessity of understandingopposing views in order to find common-ground solutions. One difference hetouches on is that between the traditional conservatism that espousestemperance and restraint and the so-called 'compassionate conservatism' thathas been driving the policy debate of the past six years. Obama characterizesthe George W. Bush brand of conservatism at the core of today's GOP as'absolutism'. There's the religious absolutism?and there is the absolute beliefin the authority of majority will?a disdain for those institutional checks (theCourts, the Constitution, the press, the Geneva Conventions, the rules of theSenate, or the traditions governing redistricting.' (pp 37-38) He alsodescribes the Democratic Party as having becoming one of reaction, and believesthat Democratic activists who 'pursue a more sharply partisan and ideologicalstrategy' in an attempt to keep up with Republicans misapprehend the momentwe're in. His deference to our solidarity as these United States of America isinfectious and I highly recommend The Audacity of Hope.It takes more than charisma and the ability to speak well to be be aneffective President but in these times these two qualities seem to be the mostimportant regardless of the abilty to do the job well to get elected. Barakshares a compelling memoir of his work, ideals and even personal life to evokemore understanding, compassion and infusion of the races.
