A Christmas Carol
(Charles Dickens)

Publicidade
Christmas is a time for family, for compassion, and for embracing our fellow humans in our hearts. However, Ebenezer Scrooge, the miserly main character in Charles Dickens novel, 'A Christmas Carol', does not seem to agree. He believes in nothing save himself and obtaining wealth. He is a cold man with no warmth, charity, or compassion for others. He scorns not only those in his employ but even his own family. He has no friends, lives alone, and has no companionship except for the tinkling of his money. Bah! Humbug! to those who do not think that wealth is the only worthy goal in life. Then, one night, his deceased partner, Jacob Marley, pays him a visit from the grave. He comes to warn Scrooge that he will end up just like Marley; dead, unmourned, and shackled by chains of his own making. Marley then proceeds to tell Scrooge he will visited by three spirits and if Scrooge heeds the lessons the spirits reveal he may yet escape the fate that has befallen Marley. The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future visit Scrooge in turn, showing him his past, present, and future from the viewpoint of others and how Scrooge's actions affects those around him. Slowly,Scrooge comes to grips with the knowledge that he has made grave errors in his life. He watches as he pushes away those who would love him and how his coldness impacts his employee Bob Cratchit and his poor family. By the story's end, he wishes to change his life, himself, for the better. It is a heartwarming story and a perfect read for the Christmas season.
