That Childhood Country
(Deirdre Purcell)
I had been living in and around Literary HQ in Dublin for sometime and got a great gilt edged invitation from the local Intelligentsia who said that my presence is requested at the Book Launch and signing of Deirdre Purcell in a Bookstore in Central Dublin next Friday.
I quickly replied "affirmative", and got a babysitter for the dog, sorted out my own play writings got the gardener something to cut down and dig up and managed to keep the family together with promises of a big reunion at Christmas. Happily for me the garage across the street was selling Christmas Trees, so I booked a Christmas Tree early. Dropped in on the local Dry Cleaning Lady from Australia, and got all my cleaning sorted out well, in advance of the Christmas Holidays. We were driving "North" to see our relatives in The Mournes and were taking the dog on a long drive.
Anyhow back to Deirdre Purcell. I stopped in my tracks, left everything hanging and got to the Book launch around 5 pm ... it was jam packed ... I had to push forward to get the book, and then get it signed. The media was there in large numbers and it was really a very big event which of course I was delighted to attend.
This particular book: That Childhood Country .. deals with romantic love ... two young lovers are filled with passion for each other and this obsession would play a dominate role in both their lives.
Rose O'Beirne Moffat, was the sole inheritor of her father's estate ... and she had to say adieu to her lover John O'Flynn who in contrast was poor and had to emigrate to Canada ... this experience is echoed across two continents.
And it haunts the book in as much as it becomes for them that beautiful childhood country. Another of my favourite writers had complimented my choice here and she is quoted as saying that the book wasso good she couldnt "put it down" ...
Its a lovely story ... excellent stuff ... keep on reading.
