So Long, and Thanks For All The Fish
(Douglas Adam)
Douglas Adams? So Long, and Thanks for All the FishThis humorous novel comes by itself or collected with the other five books of the trilogy. Pagination below comes from the omnibus The Ultimate Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy. ?Though he did not know it, Rob McKenna was a Rain God. All he knew was that his working days were miserable and he had a succession of lousy holidays. All the clouds knew was that they loved him and wanted to be near him, to cherish him and to water him? (p481). This is the kind of observation I love in Adams. He also suggests drug warfare instead of the real thing: ?it was the CIA experimenting with drug warfare or something. Some crackpot theory that instead of invading a country it would be much cheaper and more effective to make everyone think they?d been invaded? (p497). Lower casualties. Arthur becomes ?an alien on his own world? (p501). Been there. Another reason I like Adams. Arthur comes home: ?The door had to be forced open because of the astonishing accumulation of junk mail on the door mat. It jammed itself stuck on what he would later discover were fourteen identical, personally addressed invitations to apply for a credit card he already had, seventeen identical threatening letters for nonpayment of bills on a credit card he didn?t have, thirty-three identical letters saying that her personally had been selected as a man of taste and discrimination who knew what he wanted and where he was going in today?s sophisticated jet-setting world and would he therefore like to buy some grotty wallet? (p503). He?s been away for two years, so he doesn?t expect electricity, but it?s there. ?This appealed to Arthur?s sense of logic. Since the Electricity Board had cut him off without fail every time he paid his bill, it seemed only reasonable that they should leave him connected when he hadn?t. Sending them money obviously only drew attention to himself? (p503). About sheep: ?sensation of being a sheep startled by a flying saucer, but it was virtually indistinguishable from the feeling of being a sheep startled by anything else it ever encountered, for they were creatures who learn very little on their journey through life, and would be startled to see the sun rising in the morning, and astonished by all the green stuff in the fields? (p506). It?s depressing that the Bible says mankind are like sheep. I?d rather not be a goat, true, but still.
