Germany After The End Of The Economic Miracle And The Welfare State: Where Next?
(E.R.)

Publicidade
To all appearances, Germany is not doing well. As a result of this socio-economic situation, the politicians are looking to two things with which to make an impression on the politically-conscious citizen. Firstly, the parties are fighting for the trust of the German people. The SPD (Social Democrats) slogan during the last election campaign was 'Trust in Germany'. A second issue of the politicians has to do with solutions to the difficulties. And , of course, criticisms of the solutions offered by the other parties. It is not surprising: since the end of the economic Miracle and the Welfare State, Germany has been caught up in a vicious circle. The ending of the Economic Miracle has thrown up two fundamental problems: growth stagnation and an increase in unemployment. The Welfare State has been believed to be supposedly responsible for this. And so the Age of Economic Liberalism has come into being. Apparently without success. German growth and productivity have stagnated despite an international and European boom. The actual German Gross Domestic Product has stayed the same since 1995. For that reason, income levels, investment and standards of living have stagnated. But without investment and consumption, production levels cannot expand. Another basic component of this crisis is unemployment. Unemployment levels have risen constantly since the end of the Economic miracle which has also adversely affected production and consumption. Above all, since the economic crisis has been linked to increased work flexibility, all positions of employment have deteriorated: as work becomes harder to find, so the conditions of employment become worse. The German unions have contributed to these phenomena, in as far as inequality has increased. The population feels embittered and all trust in the politicians has been lost. And yet without trust and successful measures, economic growth will never be retrieved. The Economic Miracle has ended in all European countries. So why are German growth levels not as high as the European growth rate? Why is German unemployment higher than that of France? The difference is possibly connected to the development of the Welfare State, but no one answer is unequivocal. Domestic consumption, which is way too weak, is probably also partly to blame. Which solutions are realistic? Till now all reforms have failed. Muentefering has tried to explain it: does the power belong to the wrong people? Obviously Germany urgently needs special measures. Changes are useless and meaningless when made before supporting the people. Germany has carried out liberal reforms; now the government should put social reforms into place.
