INSOLATION by Horacio Quiroga.-Dogs can see death, when it comes looking for somebody. On this popular belief, Quirogafounds the base of an exceptional tale. The place: Missions, in the Argentine Northwest, where the author lived his better years. A ranch, and its owner,mister Jones, an English man taken root in that hot and hostile earth. In the place, under protection of his owner, are several dogs. One warm morning, one of them - the youngest, claims to haveperceived the presence of míster Jones. Seeing the figure of his master,he lets know it to the other dogs. These, frightened, persuade him of hiserror: it is not more than a performancethat the death doesjust a short time before arriving to getsome mortal. Scared and nervous, they spend the time barking, in an attempt to prevent the death from catching the master.Arounfnoon, míster Jonesgoes downtown for some bussiness.He returns on foot, crossing the tideland of rushes to gain time. The sun, implacable, toasting the crust of the ground, forces to the men and animals to take refuge in the shade, under pain to perish by insolation. The shade andfrequently drinkingwater are, it is known, indispensable.Butmister Joneswas advancingunder the burning heat without objection. The dogs, in the distance, seehim walk towards the house, with the slow cadence forced by the vegetation. Suddenly they notice the presence, distant still, of other míster Jones, the one that brings with himself the death.It walks along the field, not towards the house but in straight line to the path that the boss will take. There is no doubt that insome point it will intercept him. The Dogs bark furiously, trying to warn about the danger only thay can see. It's useless: míster Jones continuesfirmly on his wayand, finally,he is reached by theother one, whichblends withhim on a single individual. Míster Jones falls fulminated, while the dogs don't stop their vain barking.Fewdays later, a relative comes to sell the goods, the land and all facilities. The dogs, left alone andill, become wild and will have to feed themselves stealing corn from other other people's fields at night.
