The 5S ProgramThe 5S program was implemented in Japan after the Second World War and later spread over all the other continents and it is presently used in many industries. It guarantees in its essence the satisfaction of customer needs through the improvement in processes, eliminating wastes and guaranteeing the fabrication of products/services of higher quality.What does each "S" mean?SEIRI: Sense of Utilization ? ?Only the necessary?It is the constant practice of identifying materials, equipments, tools, utensiles, information and data needed and not needed, discarding or giving the right destination to that which is considered unnecessary to the professional activities. SEITON: Sense of Organization ? ?Dont waste time searching?It is the definition of proper locations and criteria to store, maintain and dispose of materials, equipments, tools, utensiles, information and data as to facilitate its use and handling, facilitating the search, localization and storage of any item.SEISOU: Sense of Cleanliness ? ?Better than cleaning is not getting dirt? It consists on eliminating constantly the dirt or undesired particles keeping the environment clean (wall, closets, drawer, shells, floor) as well as keeping data and information updated to guarantee the correct decision taking process.SEIKETSU: Sense of Health ? ?Welfare to all?Create favorable conditions to mind and physical integrity, guarantee a non aggressive environment free of polluting agents, keep the good sanitary conditions at common areas, zeal for personnal care and keep clear information and communication.SHITSUKE: Sense of Self-Discipline ? ?Keep good habits?It focus on developing the habit to observe and keep the rules, standards and procedures, meeting the specifications, whether they are written or not. This habit can be translated into ?really wanting? or ?really be willing to?, or be prompt to?... The 5S program is the foundation, the base, to the vigorous development of several enterprises all over the world. In Brazil its use is already part of the organizational culture od many companies, bringing improvements in the lives of employees as well as to the community in general.
