(Valentin Fuster)

Publicidade
This book is classic advice that the majority of doctors give on a daily basis put down on paper. The author does nothing but transcribe what is advised to patients and why. His position conforms 100% to orthodox medicine and he doesn?t pretend to have discovered anything new or to give any special advice that one couldn?t get from any moderately informed medical source. He does not depart from current medical standards. On the other hand, the position of the author is a return to coherence and common sense in the face of the all of the magic cures and revolutionary new discoveries that are propagated in editorials and bookstores. Anyone who occasionally reads about medicine or has some knowledge in the area will learn nothing new from this book. Anyone who finds themselves dizzy from all of the offers of magical medical treatments can use this book as a reference to look to for good common-sense advice. The objective of the book is to prevent illness, especially cardiovascular illness, which the author specializes in, and he begins by inviting the readers to take better care of their health. After that he goes through a series of recommended diagnostic tests which should be done depending on the age and the medical conditions of the patient/reader. Basic recommendations are to test cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood glucose level. He explains in a complete, yet succinct, way how each of these tests work and their importance. He also includes an explanation of the importance of weight and diet, seeing as being overweight is the principle cause of changes in the abovementioned tests. He gives some general advice about the types of foods which are good to eat, and luckily, he doesn?t prescribe a specific diet, but rather, a series of general parameters about how to eat.He then dedicates a chapter apiece to the following topics: vitamins and minerals, carbohydrates, fats, protein, alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and the importance of physical activity. He ends with a description of heart attack and stroke, their symptoms, and ways to prevent them.
