When Katie Pickard, a feature writer for the Brighton & Hove Courier, is sent by her editor to interview Australian psychic Jim Gabriel for a forecast of events in the year ahead, in an unprepared turn of events he predicts that they will be married by next summer. Skeptical as she is about a psychic who predicts the future peering into a bucket of sea water, Katie is forced to acknowledge the fact that his predictions about the past are accurate. Then her intrigue turns to belief when his predictions of the year?s event start coming true one by one. Katie?s so far relatively uncomplicated life turns to chaos when Peter Oram, her childhood crush, now a struggling musician moves in with her. All goes well until and she discovers his mushroom-eating and womanizing ways. Further trouble comes from the local witch, Courtney Creeler, and her coven that use their spells and voodoo to get hired at the newspaper and step into the love life of Katie?s editor Guy. Cats go missing from the neighborhood and the birds start acting strange as the coven?s spells get stronger.The final twist comes when Courtney, who is spurned by Jim, gets jealous of Katie?s friendship with him and decides to use her power over the new editor to get a story published on Jim being an illegal immigrant. To save Jim from being deported, Katie agrees to marry him thus making his prediction come true.Will their marriage survive the test of time and distance or will Katie finally settle in a long-term relationship with Peter Oram? This book is easy reading - the kind that you can finish on a long flight ? funny but with a dark twist. Those looking for a realistic, light-hearted comedy on the lines Bridget Jones by Helen Fieldingare in for disappointment.
