Utopia
(Thomas More)

Publicidade
Thomas More?s ?Utopia? is discovered on a voyage to the newly found America. More coined the term ?Utopia? which is a pun meaning both ?good place? and ?no place??As the title itself suggests the place More talks about is an imaginary world. Theoretically, one can visualize the place but practically it is non existent. In the sixteenth century, the kings ruled roost and indulged in luxuries paying scant attention to the sufferings of the citizens. Poverty and diseases were rampant amongst the labor class. Kings like Henry V!!! Of England and Francis I of France glorified war and thought it were noble to embark on war for the flimsiest of reasons. Large number of men was killed and crops were destroyed and people had to pay heavy taxes to fill the Kings coffer. These inequalities prodded More?s social conscience which made him dwell on the problems pervasive not only in Europe but also in the whole world. He conjured up a happy peaceful society devoid of any kind of problems. In More?s Utopia there was perfection everywhere. The King and Ministers with their limited powers took care of their citizens lawfully. There were no strict laws which administered stringent punishment. The land and money were equally distributed amongst the citizens. Everybody had to put in efforts and eke out his living. More speaks the lifestyle of the citizens where everybody has to strive equally for his living. There are no distractions like taverns or beer bars to indulge in. People can live peacefully and happily without any problems. Personally I feel that it would have been boring to live in a State like Utopia. life would be dull without any ups and downs. It is easy to imagine problem less world but Practically it is impossible to attain such a state in life. Abstract by: J. Prabha
