They swear an oathnot to tell anyone what they have seen, although they laterfeel guilty about keeping it to themselves. After Beckystops coming to school and is nowhere to be seen, Tombecomes dejected. Aunt Polly is worried about hisbehaviour,so she buys some Pain-Killer,which he feeds toPeter the cat.Tom, Joe and Huck run away from home and hide out onJackson's Island. Tom sneaks back home to see what's goingon and finds out that everyone thinks the three boys havedrowned and will be holding a funeral the next Sunday ifthey are not found by then. Tom makes plans for theirreturn. They hide in the church and reveal themselves whenthe funeral is over. After he gets back to school, Tom triesto make Beckyjealous by hanging around with Amy Lawrence, but she snubshim and sits with Alfred Temple instead. Aunt Polly forgivesTom for running away when she learns of his secret nightvisit, and why he came back.When an innocent man is accusedof the murder in the graveyard, Tom finally comes forwardand tells what he saw that night, and is a heroagain.Unfortunately, the real killer is still on the loose... Tom convinces Huck to go digging for buried treasure, andthey wind up in an empty house that is used by Injun Joe andhis partner in crime.The criminals are planning to takerevenge on someone, and take their loot to buryelsewhere.While Tom goes exploring a cave with Becky and herfamily,Huck learns what treachery Injun Joe is planning andwarnsMr. Welsh, who saves the widow Douglas, but the thugsescape. Meanwhile, back in the cave,Tom and Becky getseparated fromthe rest of the party.Three days later,after everyone hasgiven up any hope of them being alive,Tom and Becky findtheir way out. With the hoodlums out of the way, Tomconvinces Huck that he knows where their buried treasureis.When they get back home, the widow Douglas tries to adoptHuck as a reward for saving her life, but he won't have it.Tom Sawyer was Mark Twain's first full length novel. Many ofTom and Huck's adventures really happened to him in boyhood.Twain, whose real name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens, pilotedsteamboats along the Mississippi for four years beforebeginning writing short stories for newspapers. The novelwaswritten mainly for children, but the author hoped thatadults would enjoy it as well, and they have.
