The phenomenon of Sri Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi in India, the modern spiritual guru nonpareil, has evoked great interest, curiosity and adoration in various degrees among a large number of seekers of truth all over the world. While in India itself Sri Sathya Sai Baba is readily taken as an 'Avatar' or Godhead by millions of his devotees who have in one way or another benefited by deep faith in him, many from abroad come to visit him to know for themselves the truth about all the stories heard or reported about him and his miracles. Many came as doubters and returned as staunch followers.

There are quite a few books written by foreign visitors to Puttaparthi about their direct experiences and information and stories gathered from the general public as well as close devotees of Sri Sathya Baba. Some of these books written ardent followers of Swami (as he is generally called) are evidence of total faith of the writersin Swami's godliness. There are others who try to rationalise and put in right perspective the truth as understood by them of the Sai phenomena, without bias or prejudice. Bill Aitken's book on "Sri Sathya Sai Baba" (published by the Penguin Group) belongs to the latter category.

Any seeker of truth who comes to visit Sri Sathya Sai Baba with an open mind cannot escape the all too visible presence of Baba's spiritual grace and the love he exudes. And one can also not but be impressed by the all inclusive nature of his teachings, irrespective of caste, creed or religion. (Baba's famous saying is: "There is only one religion, the religion of love".) What you witness when you are in the presence of Baba is, according to Bill Aitken, "the remarkable power of Love at work". Also evident is the extent of social work initiated by him for human welfare in the fields of Education, Medical service and water supply to draugfht affected neighboring areas. The energy that he brings out in getting work done in these areas in record time is beyond the bounds of any normal human being. Baba has proclaimed that his primary target is "Vidya" (education) and "Vaidya" (medical aid) besides spiritual guidance.

What comes out of Bill Aitken's genuine efforts in unraveling the myth of the Sai phenomenon in an objective way,is the story of an " extraordinary god-like character of the Sai" beloved of millions all over the globe.

Here is a book written in a very absorbing narrative style, adorned with colorful photographs of Shirdi Sai Baba and Sathya Sai Baba in Puttaparthi. This is a book not to be missed.
