Each book in the series grows darker and more comlex, more somber and violent. The latest opens with the murder of an old man. Some parents and editors are happy to see young people read anything rather than watch TV or go to the cinema, but reading about sorcery encourage some youth to dabble in it. Some boys turn to witchcraft, and some girls join covens to learn about casting spells to pass exams, find boyfriends or become rich. The Pagan Federation says curious youth and children contact them in sufficient numbers that they?ve appointed their first youth officer. Wizardry makes some children feel powerful and worthwhile and special because they possess "secret" knowledge, but as they get pulled into it, it possesses and obsesses them. Prior to their deaths, they were obsessed with black metal music, gruesome and violent movies and video games.A teen girl commits suicide, leaving behind a diary containing elaborate drawings of satanic scenes.A young man chops off his left hand and stabs himself in the chest as part of an occult ritual to "purify his body."A fourteen-year-old boy preoccupied with books on the occult claims to have had a vision of Satan, after which he kills his mother.
