Agamemnon
(Aeschylus)

Publicidade
Agamemnon is a brilliant Greek tradgedy that would rival most modern day soap operas for its betrayal and intrigue. Agememnon is a play about post war happenings in the kingdom of Agamemnon after he and his companions come home after fighting in Troy. Due to Aeschylus's unique use of the chorus as a main charecter rather than a bit part the reader learns much about what has happened previous to the plays opening to set the current chain of events in motion. Through the wise old men in the chorus it is come to be umderstood that the war between the Trojans and Greeks came about when Prince Paris who is a Trojan stole the beautiful Helen who was the wife of the Greek King, Menelaus. We also learn the love of a King for his country when we realise that Agamemnon sacrificed his daughter to the Gods so that luck would be on their side as they sailed towards the battle. At the beginning of the play, Queen Clytemnestra, Agememnons wife brings news that the Greeks have been truimphant and have conquered troy and Agemenon and his cohorts are on the way home. Agemenon does indeed ride home victorious and his wife welcomes him with open arms. Along with Agemenon comes Cassandra a slave who has powers to predict the future. Cassandra foretells the doom which will come to the house of Agamemnon. Clymnetsra order Cassandra inside and Agemenon follows, Cytemnestra also goes inside and as we soon discover murders both Cassandra and Agamemnon. The Queen is not ashamed of her murderous deed as she believes Agamemnon deserved to die for sacrificing their daughter as too did the wench who lay beside him. Up until this point it is easy to empathise with Clytemnestra, as a mother who is greiving over the death of her child but whe she murders Cassandra a women who had nothing to do with that tradgedy we begin to doubt her character and in the final scene she gives the reader more reason to be dubious. In this scene we meet Clytemnestras lover, Aegisthus who is thrilled to learn of Agamenons death at the hands of his beloved as he has a long running feud with Agemenons ancestors. Agamemnons father exiled Aegisthus father because he tried to take his crown,Aegisthus father begged to come backinto the kingdom and was told he could and that he was forgiven byAgemenons father who was only feigning forgivness and instead cooked two of Aegithus's brothers and fed them to his father to eat. So now Aegithus feels that his family has been avenged. The chorus, however has a final warning for Aegisthus, that Agemenons son will avenge him for his fathers death which of course laeds us very nicely into Aeushlyus's second play. Aeschylus is a master of tradgedy and makes us feel repulsed and beguiled by human nature.
