Veronika Decides to Die is a book based on a real story. The main character of thebook, Veronika, has kept a diary for a long time. Afterwards, these records came into Paulo Coelho's acknowledgement, who saw in those pages theopportunity for writing a new romance. Veronika was a young, pretty woman from agood family, wooed by boys of her age. She had all reasons to be happy, but shewasn't. Her insatisfaction from life sprang from inside, somethingunexplainable to herself. She decided to kill herself. The way she used were pills ? inside her bedroom, lied in her bed, with no alarms, she had programmeda silent death. When a smiling boy looked to her through the window, she smiledback and some will of living showed up; it was an ephemeron moment of regret,poison in form of pills had already been taken and she lost her senses.She woke up in a strange room ? a place fortreatment of mentally ill people. She was told word by word that she didn?tfail in her suicide attempt, and her remaining time was short. Veronika met, amongother patients, people that had been through existential problems, likeherself. Eduard, the youngster for whom she fell, had received schizophrenia diagnosis;he lived distant from reality, not even speaking. He was originally a normalboy, but his parents rejected his way of life and started pushing him veryhard. Veronika faced people who couldn?t be considered crazy, only who couldn?tadjust themselves to the world of normal people. There was even a group called ?TheFraternity?, made by people who could have already been considered healed, but wishedto remain in the institution where they could be themselves. Coexistence withthe eminence of death and makes Veronika reflect about life as she had neverdone before. It is a rich book, exploring aspects of human nature, ideas ofright and wrong, normal and prohibited. Just like Veronika, the reader has theopportunity of reflecting about himself.
