It also controls the body temperature; hunger, fullness; thirst and water balance; emotions; and sleep. The pea-sized Pituitary gland, releases important chemicals called ?hormones? into our bloodstream.Hormones affect other glands andthey in turn release other hormones. This hormonal system is regulated by the hypothalamus. This implies that if anything happens to the hypothalamus all of the major functions within the human body will be disrupted and the person will have serious problems, which could lead to death.Hormonal imbalance brings about mood swings which affects our behavior. A stressed out individuals reactions would be as follows - Getting startled easily by small soundsTrembling, nervous tics, restlessnessStutteringAccident pronenessTension and alertness leading to impulsive behaviorLack of concentrationIncreased SmokingInsomnia Dependency on anti-depression drugs, medicines for headaches, etc.Increased Alcohol intake, need for medicines to deal with the hangoverDrug addictionStressors In A NoRmal individuals lifeIf you look closely at your past life, stressors in a given situation caused yougrief.Consider the infancy phase of human life, weaningcauses stress;also seperation from its mother. Then, the childhood phase; when he over comes the ?Transition stress? -by acquiring all the necessary skills, as he moves across thedevelopmental stages. The teenage phase; marked by identity crisis andcareer choice crisis, when a studentfaces an ?approach-approach conflict? situation -Medicine or Engineering. For, both are equally good options. Finally, he makes his choice.Today, students attend the counseling sessionsto resolve this conflict. Another kind of conflict is the ?avoidance-avoidance? one whena boy aspires to be a chef and a girl wants to join the theatre, which their parentswon't approve. A new situation itself also causes stress. For example, staying away from home, for further studies, or to join a reputed institution causes stress initially, tillall arrangements are made.Equipped with professional degrees an individualenters the employment phase, where hefaces ?double approach-avoidance conflict?.He secures one job and starts looking for another, both are good, which to keep is the question. In his married-life,all is welltill the coupleknow each other. With passage of time, arguments lead tofights. Finally,if any one of them has a sexual urge he or she will refrain from expressing it, causing frustration. This is called ?approach-avoidance conflict?.If not checked in time, feelings of permanent indifference or hate will set in, which may end up in a?Divorce?.This without doubt will affect their children and others at home. Issues like, who will the child, live with, after divorce? Alimony issues, grounds of Divorce, etc. are all very stressful for both the parties. This leaves a scar in a person?s life andainful memories to keep.Prolonged stress can force an individual to neglect his work, this couldmonetarily weaken him; and in exteme cases cost himhis job.Other major stressors are ?Bereavement? and ?Terminal illness? in an individual?s life. There are other stressors, which appear small and negligible, but have a cumulative effect on the person. The strain is easily felt. They say, ?Precaution is better than cure?, but if you were not all that cautious, then, at least you can try the cure methods.Cure Methods ?Eachstressors needs to be handled differently. Age considerations of an individual, personal details, background details, educational levels, career, etc. and the situation itself, all are different. So, consider - 1 > Diet : - Rich nutritious diet, after a doctor?s consultation, if necessary. For example, anaemics need to consumeiron rich food.2 > Constructive-Training : -Depending on what the stressor is. Example, for preventing Divorce from happening, couples could opt for marriage-counseling and pre-divorce counseling sessions. Of course, sincere efforts will be expected from both the parties in this direction. Lastly, Jerome Kagan?s belief that the physiological processes of a person, limits his ability to acquire intellectual skills beyond a certain extent, which helps him deal with stressors. So,nutritious food, good night?s sleep, relaxation activities and keeping stressors away, if possible, aids in quick recovery. Remember, stress is a phase; it can set in at any time, continue and continue, stop and then continue? whenever a stressor occurs. It is not something that happens once, is treated and then gone forever.
