The Last Trip
(Don Rico)

Publicidade
The Last TripIt was late. The taxi driver received a call and he drove to the indicated address at once. He went out of the car and rang the bell; a feeble voice answered back, saying she would come down in a moment, opening the door not long afterwards and asking for help with the luggage. It was an elderly lady walking with the help of a cane. The taxi driver took the suitcase and helped her to get into the car. He asked for the address, she gave it, but she asked the driver to take her to several places before. Places where she had lived, worked, had nice and enjoyable moments? The taxi driver could infer through her few words that she wished to revisit a few loved places, since she looked attentively at a building, the club where she used to dance more than once with her love!. She would ask the driver to drive slowly or even stop in front of a building. She seemed to be able to see in the dark, in the emptiness, sighing, observing, looking and looking! The hours went by and then she told the driver, she was ready, they could drive to the asylum. In spite of the late hour, the old lady was welcomed there and asked him how much she owed him. The taxi driver replied ? nothing, Mam ? it was a courtesy, giving her a cordial and friendly hug and getting a kiss back on his face together with a few sincere words of gratitude. He decided not to work for the rest of the evening and stood quietly, just wondering. And what if he had rung only twice and then left? What if had rejected the trip because of the late hour? What if he had wished just to go home? He concluded, understanding the meaning to his wonderings, how wonderful it may be to be kind, to be devoted to someone! Two days afterwards he returned to the asylum, eager to have news and find out how his passenger was getting along. And then he knew, she had passed away the night before!Resume based on a message written at the website rico.com.br, signed by Don Rico, dated 26.7.2005.
