The Thief Lord
(Cornelia Funke)
Cornelia Funke is one of the best authors of children' s fantasy today. 'The Thief Lord' is not in the same style as her more famous books ('Inkheart' etc.), but is none the less good children's fantasy. Two orphaned brothers have run away from their prospective foster parents. They cross international borders until they come to Venice, where their foster parents catch up with them. Here they meet the Thief Lord, who does not seem to be much older than they are, but is apparently responsible for all the major robberies in the city.
The boys join his squad of children, who live in a deserted movie theatre. They are never allowed to go with the Thief Lord on his jobs, but the treasures he brings back are enough proof of his skill. The brothers are not content to remain hidden however and eventually they run into trouble.
The characterisation is fascinating. The Thief Lord, the children he rules and the crazy detective looking for the missing brothers are some of the most engaging characters I have encountered. Partway through, the story takes an unexpected twist and what may have been a fairly simple, true-to-life storybecomes a fantastic tale about the workings of the human mind.
'The Thief Lord' is a great read; its characters will remain in your mind for days after you finish the book.
