It is a renowned and much-acclaimed comedy by the Restoration dramatist William Congreve .In it Congreve reaches near perfection with his deft characterization, witty dialogue and flawless construction. The story of the play counts hardly. It is tale of love intrigues, character assassinations, discomfiture and ultimate union of lovers. Mirabell is in love with Millament, the niece of Lady Wishfort ,who is the custodian of this niece?s inheritance. Mirabell hides his love for Millament and pretends to make love with her aunt. The deceit is brought to the open by Mrs.. Marwood, who revenges herself on Mirabell for spurning her advances. Mirabell contrives that his own servant ,impersonating an uncle of his , Sir Rowland, make love to Lady Wishfort .The purpose is to win the consent of the aunt in the marriage of the niece. This ploy too is caught by Mrs. Marwood. Another conspiracy is hatched by Mrs. Marwood who now loves Mr, Fainfall ,the son-in-law of Lady Wishfort. The two exposes Mirabell?s past amorous intrigue with Mrs. Fainfall. Mr. Fainfall threatens to divorce his wife unless he is given the possession of the property of his wife as well as Millamant?s. The scemes ends in smoke by the intervention of Mirabell. Lady Wishfort now consents to the marriage of Mirabell with her niece, Millamant. The plot is thus a string of confused and often impossible situations. But there are quite a few animated and entertaining scenes ,where reputations are sullied. This again gives the dramatist ample opportunity to churn out witty and lively dialogues , which are the chief excellence of the play. The portrait of Millamant , ?finely tempered in sense and intellect? is Congreve?s most memorable creation. KET
