A Different Christmas
(Grisham, John)

Publicidade
This short story, of only 222 pages written by John Grisham in 2001 is the twelfth of nineteen that he has written and it is a comedy. It is the first story that doesn?t have a legal backdrop. It tells the story of a middle class family whose only daughter decides on finishing her studies to go to the jungles of Peru to volunteer in the communities there just weeks before the Christmas period, leaving her parents on their own for the festivities. The absences of their daughter makes Luther look again at Christmas, the festivities, the food, the presents, the formalities, what should and shouldn?t be done, the opinions of everyone else and many other things that "happen" because thats the way it is every year.Luther decides that this year they will skip Christmas and he and his wife will go on a Caribbean cruise for 10 days. It wasn?t easy to convince her but he finally does and they both start to dream about their coming cruise. From then on they find that nobody approves of their decision (as if they were authorised to give an opinion) and everyone did their best to discourage them, making them feel that they were doing something they shouldn?t and they would end up paying for it.Every situation they come across makes this a very sweet comedy, easy to read, brief but with a very clear message. I won?t tell the end, but I will say is if what I think everyone will expect as an ending, it isn?t what I wanted. If I had to give marks out of 10 I would give it a 9.
