Morning, Noon & Night
(Sidney Sheldon)
Yet another page turner by master raconteur, Sidney Sheldon. When the head of Stanford Industries dies suddenly, he leaves behind a vast fortune to be shared equally amongst his progeny. Trouble arises when the wealthy patriarch's illegitimate daughter, Julia Stanford, pops up to claim her share. Then she mysteriously disappears. Then... wonder of wonders... another woman turns up claiming to be the late Harry Stanford's foundling. Who, in that case, is the real Julia Stanford? The book goes on to describe the other siblings to merry lengths. There is Tyler for instance, with a guilty secret discovered early in life by his vicious, domineering father. Now a judge, Tyler's methods of devising means to achieve his ends are inimitable. Then there is Kendall, a successful designer with everything going for her - a soaring career-graph, an adoring husband and, of course, the high-priced Stanord name. Yet, beneath all that sheen is a frightened woman - frightened by that one incident on a dark night that changed her life forever. Woodrow 'Woody' Wilson, the youngest amongst the (legitimate) siblings, is a wastrel, on the other hand. A playboy and a drug-addict, he is also a wife-beater. As characters disappear as mysteriously as some important clues, the reader may well ask: which one is the malefactor here? The novel takes the reader from the picturesque environs of St-Paul-de-Vence to the bustling urbanity of Boston at a breath-taking pace with red herrings thrown all the way. A thriller in the true Sidney Sheldon tradition.
