Batman ? Ra?s Al Ghul

ABSTRACT GRAYSON, DEVIN & GULACY, PAUL ? BATMAN ? RA?S AL GHUL 2006 DC Comics. Super-villains often come back from the dead to fight the heroes again. You know you haven?t heard the last of the Joker, Penguin, etc, when Batman dispenses with them. Ra?s Al Ghul is a villain who turns that concept around in very unexpected ways. At the start of the story, he is already dead. He was a virtually immortal villain, who had raised an army of the dead to serve his needs. He had gained his own powers through mystical peaches in a Chinese Orchard, but the orchard had been destroyed. Through study of alchemy he has learned to create zombies through a series of Lazarus Pits. Ghul had become a terrorist, concerned with ecology issues. He felt that the world was becoming over-populated and hoped to destroy most of its population. He still does. Which Batman has destroyed in a previous battle with him? Ra?s Al Ghul himself has been decapitated. Now, Batman has received a letter from him, telling him of an evil plan from beyond the grave, which has in fact already started to go into action. The dying people of Gotham are no longer capable of death. They are lying in hospital beds in eternal agony. Worse, the dead are coming back as zombies. Many chase Batman and torment him for sending them to death, or for haunting their minds in their hellish torments. Ra?s Al Ghul makes it clear to Batman that there is only one way in which he can end this. Batman himself must recreate a Lazarus Pit, through which Ra?s Al Ghul could possibly return from the dead. Faced with overwhelming odds as the dead rise in too great a number for him to handle, Batman creates the pit. The graphic novel ends with Batman vowing to be ready for Ra?s Al Ghul as and when he does succeed in coming back from the dead. For now however, the plague of the undead is over. A strong thoughtful story with imaginative touches, i.e., the ocean spilling over with zombie fish because the sharks can?t chew their undead prey?. But there are long pseudo-mystical flashbacks to earlier events between Batman and Ra?s Al Ghul that fragment the otherwise excellent narrative.
