Fiódor Dostoiévski is, no doubt, one of the best writers of the worldliterature and he is still one of the bigginers in the branch of theliterature called modernism. It was 1866, in the midle of his maturecarreer as writer, that the russian author publied The Gambler, one of his masterpieces and best sellers. Here we can see, as became the greatmark of his work, the genius of the narrative that let us come in tothe unexpected trillers of his propre life.In an ambience ofcassinos, at Rotembourg, Germany, the history goes over the life of theyoung Aleksey Ivánovitch who, despite his strong and vivid personalityand of his great sense of criticism to his world, he has no realtargets to his life. Working in a family hotel who's the owner is aGeneral, Ivánovitch realises that the things aren't going well when henotes that Miss Blanche and Mr. Des Grieux, two french people, who have suspicious relations with the General and, still, his half-doughter Polina Aleksandrovna. One day Polina asks Aleksey to play for her inthe casino's roulette, because she was in trouble and she wants muchmoney. Despite the strange order, Aleksey that was in love for her,dont ask for reasons and he plays in a casino, for the first time inhis life. In this moment his obsession for playing games of chancebegin here.But, after several discutions with his friend, Mr.Astley, a guest in the hotel, he became to realise that there arestrange coincidences between the necessity of money by the General andthe presence of the french couple at Rotembourg. Aleksei has adiscovery that the General made a big debt with Mr. Des Grieux and thathis unique chance to sold it was to wait her grand's motherinheritance, who still lived in Saint Petersburg. Everything is goingwell just the moment whem the General grand-mother appears in the hotelcausing a great chaos. She was very sick and she asks, always and ever,Aleksey's company to go to the casino to spend all her fortune. As aconsequence of this, the General there is no money to sold his debt,but the false marriage between the General and Miss Blanche has nopossibility still.After the all the money be lost in the casino'stables the mental weakness of each caracter begin to explose indiferent and unexpected possibilities. Mr Des Grieux simple desapear,and no one has any news from him. The General has a madness crisis anddie. Ivánovitch, obssesed with the idea of to marry with his belovedPolina takes all the money he still had and play at the roulette, butthis time he gains a big fortune. However, Polina decide run away with his friend Mr. Astley. The sole solution to Aleksey is to spend all hismoney with Miss Blanche. After this we can clearly see a period ofcompulsivity - still Dostoievski was a confess compulsive player - inAleksey's behavior. To a compulsive player life is play all the time,spend everything one's has, without other preocupation that, in thenext day, to play and play again.But the years are coming acrossthe time and after had been arrested, Ivanovitch meets again Mr.Astley, this time in Germany. He says that, in fact, Polina has a greatlove for him. Astley gives a little amount of money to Ivanovitch, just to he gets the train and goes to Switzerland to take back his beloved Polina.The history takes end with the narative of the inner conflict inthe Ivánovich's head: he does or doesn't take that money to play again?
