The Picture Of Dorian Gray
(Oscar Wilde)
The picture of Dorian Gray, written by the famous author and poet Oscar Wilde, is story of a vain young man.He was a handsome youth, very rich and quite naive. His portrait, which did him full justice, became ugly and old as and when he committed unspeakable and unholy deeds, which according to him were quite alright. He on the other hand, retained his youth and charm long after his friends and acquaintences had passed away.He continued on the path of wickedness and always found an excuse to condone it.Finally in death, when the portrait, which had been hidden away from public view, was brought into his presence,it had transformed itself back into the Dorian Gray of old.The same freshness, the same sophisticated handsome young man who had sat so long ago for a portrait. On the floor, however, was a wrinkled hideous man who looked very much like the old portrait.Dorian GrayThis then, is the story of our lives. Each off us.Don't we all wish that we always appear as good human beings to others.Outward view.Thats all we care about. But the soul and heart that gets wrinkled and ugly with sin is not visible to outsiders.Appearances are so important to us.Oscar Wilde in this eye opening story, has depicted just that.Humans are obsessed with outward appearances. The goodness of a a loving heart, the kindness of a pure soul and the care of a genuine being all gets washed away in the waters of selfishness. Why?Why is it that love, care and kindness cannot co exist peacefully. Why does selfishness, egoism and cruelty take their place.Oscar wilde in this book has taken a simple story and woven around it something so unforgettable.Like always ,he has made the reader think about the way a man can kill his soul in his selfishness and go on to do many sinful acts of which he justifies every action.A valuable lessonto be learned from this story. One must never forget that whatever a man does in this life may not reflect in his physical appearance, but his soul takes the brunt. It gets twisted and ugly and black and sinful.
