Screenplay The Foundations Of Screenwriting
(Syd Field)
I will sum it up in one sentence: If you want to write a screenplay, read this book as if you are listening to an admired professor. Two weeks and thirty pages of notes - that was my organization before going through Syd Field?s book. I had asked my literature professor about story construction. I talked with friends about exposition, what should happen when. I scratched my head ? a lot. Those pages of notes helped immensely after I picked up the book; however, I don?t think I would have found the direction without this guide. This was the step after the brainstorming stage. However, this does not provide answers to brainstorming story ideas. It is not a cookbook. It is not grill making instructions. It will not tell you what to write, but it will help you feed it. He explains what makes a movie different from other genres of text, and why it should be read and written with that distinction in mind. He emphasizes that importance from the beginning, and he is honest about it.He is very honest. He emphasizes screenwriting?s nature of growth as predominantly that of business; yet, he explains key entertainment essentials to story construction within the genre. He gives first hand examples of how important the beginning of a movie is. He gives the common ingredients found in those different, successful screenplays. He explains how the beginning determines who gets produced and who doesn?t - from his perspective as a screenwriter and reader. He explains what each of those beginnings has that make them so good, so you can (hopefully) do the same. Then, he goes on to explain the blueprints behind a screenplay, and helps you layout your own. Own it to become familiar with the angles in fundamental screenwriting, hobby or career.
