Tess Of The D'urbervilles, A Pure Woman
(Thomas Hardy)
Tess is the name of the heroine of this novel, a masterpiece penned by the expert storyteller, Thomas Hardy. He faced many criticisms about the narration of incidents which offended the conscientious sentiment of Christians as per Andrew Lang who reviewed the novel in the New Review in February, 1892, for which the author gave a spirited defense and asserted the sub-title "A Pure Woman' was justified. This is an absorbing story of an innocent girl whose future was ruined by a supposed relative of the clan of d'Urberville and her misfortune as an unwed mother burying her baby unbaptised is indeed pathetic. The abandoning of Tess by her husband soon after marriage on learning of her past from her and the final drama of Tess killing her seducer and settling scores with fate is touching. The reader feels the optimism at the unfolding future life with Tess and is dashed to pieces with her when she falls only to rejoice with her at her new life with her marriage to Angel Clare and feels confused with her at the turn of events and her being abandoned by her husband; and weeps when she murders her tormentor and is arrested. The twists and turns of the plot keep the reader on toes and the sorrow overhang long after the story has been told.
