I am absolutely enthralled by Haruki Murakami?s latest collection of short stories Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman. It is just an absolute must read for anybody who is interested in his work. His earlier collection of short stories The Elephant Vanishes was just as captivating. For you who don?t know him, he?s one of the most popular authors to ever arise in Japan. He mostly writes fiction but has written some fascinating fiction as The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, South of the Border, West of the Sun, Sputnik Sweetheart and Norwegian Wood. He definately does write ?weird? as described by many, but it is this unconventional style that really draws me in, away from the drone and mediocrity of everyday existance. Murakami reports that in trying to reflect reality and write ?real? his work tends to get weirder and weirder. When you read Murakami?s texts, you get this feeling that anything might happen and that is just captivating. I believe this is partly as he has his own unique blend of magical realism that he uses to lead his character through magnificant and seemingly mundane experiences. In ?Birthday Girl? a young Girl is directed to the room of a mysterious and evasive restaurant owner who grants her any wish she may desire, when he discovers that it?s her birthday. The story describes the poignant reaction of the girl to the wish and the way that her life turnsout after the significant day with the restaurant owner. ?A perfect day for Kangaroos? is equally puzzling and peculiar which describes a young couples visit to a zoo to see a baby kangaroo. Another tale curiously explores a middle aged man?s mysterious and inexplainable case of naseau and anonymous phonecalls which seem to somehow correlate and ends up being drawn parallel to this man?s quirky dating habits. In each story the reader is confronted with interesting questions and contemplations about the meaning of everyday life and not so everyday life and existance. His short stories are truly a treasure trove to be explored and cherised.
