Set in France and England against the historical background of the rule of king Louis XIII, actually overruled by Cardinal Richelieu. King's wife has a romance with Prince Buckingham, but the sympathy of the author as well as the heroes are with her. At the same time they are devoted to the King against the Cardinal, who is depicted as a villain plotting against the ruler.
Many films and sequels are based upon the book.
