Hamlet
(Shakespeare)

Publicidade
The Other Side Of HamletIt has been widely accepted that Hamlet is a play, a tragedy, depicting Hamlet's indecision, his tragic weakness. Thanks to A.C.Bradley and co. But, a close scrutiny of the play would reveal that if Hamlet would have acted quickly, the creative intention of the play would have been lost. Shakespeare, being a master craftsman, could have created a situation in which Hamlet could kill the King early in the play and still retain it as a tragedy. The idea, I am sure, was different. He wanted a character strong enough in the play to expose all the limed souls, struggling to be free. This is a soul-scanning play. So, there is no question of procrastination. Words, instead of the dagger, do the act. The revenge is intended to be achieved through words. And Hamlet did achieve it.The use of dagger would not have done what the words could do to Claudius. Hamlet made him realize that his offence is rank, smelling to Heaven. Claudius leaves his experience behind, telling that one cannot be pardoned while retaining the rewards of crime. The confession from Claudius that his bosom is as black as death is the great tribute Hamlet could pay to his father. Similarly, Hamlet succeeded in making his mother turn her eyes into her soul. He was also successful in exposing all the treacherous plots of Claudius and made Leartes call him noble Hamlet. He taught us the consequence of meddling in others' affairs through the death of Polonius. If Ophelia had the wisdom to know the wickedness of her father, and also know how he was using her to please the king, Hamlet would have retained her, as he retained his love to Horatio.Probably, it is due to the concept of revenge we maintain that we fail to see the greatness in Hamlet. Right from the begenning of the play, our eyes remain screwed to watch when Hamlet is going to take Claudius physically. This curiosity dilutes our understanding of the noble nature of Hamlet. Even if the ghost is right, or even though his father is right, a noble philosopher like Hamlet cannot stoop down to the base level. He has in him that sense of responsibility, that he was ever born to set this world right. And he did succeed in clearing the weeds around him, though he could not survive to see the fruit of it. What is valuable and valid is that the spectators are able to leave the theatre with their rotten minds refined.
