Our Man The President
(Bode Sowande)
This book paints the picture of the political situation of the African states particularly the Nigerian conquest. As written in the excerpt at the back of the novel, "the gripping tale of political intrigue and corruption?the group of young idealists led by Eman Adamu fight on despite tragedy and disappointment to bring the conflict to its dramatic climax".It?s a novel in which the young almost successfully ousted greedy political aspirants who were really tyrants in the making. The plot was centered on Eman Adamu, an upcoming pressman. Almost at the peak of his career, Eman discovers he is eating his delicacy from the wrong plate. He allows his views and ideal rule his hands and hence, his pen. On discovering he is working for a man whose aims and objectives are basically against what he exhumes in his Editor?s page, he determines to hold on to the rope growing Marxism as against his boss, Chief Aloba, the nation?s Father Christmas. His race leads him into a bigger battle of political intrigue and social rivalry. He finds himself, against his own will, pitched against his old enemy and boss together with other people like him. He, therefore, faces both individual battle and the collective one in form of his generationBefore he is sacked, Man Adamu had written some materials and stored them in files and the vitals in microfilms. Chief Aloba, aware of this, hires armed robbers against him. The hired men find nothing and the battle, to Man Adamu, is lost and won. He draws the final straw as he, after much persuasion, agrees to work for another rival newspaper owned by a rival political aspirant, Chief Etim. He is immediately handed a dossier on Father Christmas. Man Adamu on the other hand soon has both a private detective and the police on his back for cases ranging from the murder of Yellow the leader of the robbery gang to impersonation. The National Security Organisation (NSO) resumes their assignment, this time in conjunction with Swiss police. Their agent, Sankore monitors Eman closely as he moves from the point of negotiation to PanAfrika and afterwards, to his hotel. He makes this routine though Eman is also under heavy protection by Jean-Paul. In his attempt to hold up against the NSO, the Swiss police and Francois? team, Jean-Paul loses Eman to Francois? team. Man Adamu is kidnapped and afterwards forced to give information about his motive and members of his team of collaborators. Despite the pain he was subjected to, he wards off all questions. He becomes mentally derailed due to the hypodermic needle he was injected with during his interrogation. Jean-Paul employs Jaja a desperate and ruthless young man as he leads the attack against Chief Aloba and his collaborators. Man Adamu is conveyed back to Nigeria in his state though his battle is declared won. Meanwhile, Jaiye and his partner, Kansas prepare with Sadia who is both Jaiye and Chief Aloba?s mistress for the assassination which is to take place during the formal opening of Chief Aloba?s new hotel. Earlier that day, Sadia smuggled in their guns in canned fish containers. Jaiye, the mouthpiece accuses Aloba of looting and manipulating justice, all against the masses. To escape and gain more security, Chief Etim and Chief Kibeoju introduces their international counterpart and partner PanAfrika. With Man Adamu on their side, Chief Etim and Kibeoju decide to buy information against Chief Aloba. The saga ended happily but with a lot of losses on all sides; Man Adamu lost his sanity, Jaiye his life and that of his unborn child (the one Sadia was carrying). The whole group of Marxists and Communist lost their friend, Jaiye and the revolutionist of all times, Man Adamu whose philosophy of life is that of life as a dream and the world itself as an illusion. As he recuperates, he sings;"Row, row, row your boat,Gently down the stream,Merrily Merrily merrily merrily,Life is but a dream."
