Man And Superman
(George Bernard Shaw)

Publicidade
Man and Superman is a famous philosophical play by the celebrated genius George Bernard Shaw.It was first performed in1905.This play is the product of Shaw?s second period of dramatic writings. Shaw is famous for lambasting social institutions and criticizing conventional yet faulty ideas. Here, he expounds his idea of creative evolution. The plot actually recreates the Don Juan legend in modern, altered guise. John Tanner,a well-to-do radical, author of the Revolutionist?s Handbook is co-guardian to ann Whitefield along with Roebuck Ramsden, the conventional liberal. Though Octavius Robinson has fallen head over heels in love with Ann ,he stands readily rejected as Ann targets John Tanner. Tanner, fleeing on a continental motor-trip dreams of Don Juan in Hell in the Sierras. Being awake, he finds himself secured by Ann at Granada. In the subplot, Violet, Octavius?s sister gets pregnant supposedly out of wedlock, but she reveals her secret marriage to the Irish-American millionaire, Hector Malone. The play is remarkable for witty dialogue and the brilliant rendering of philosophical issues. The first part of the play exhibits wonderful dramatics. ?Don Juan in Hell?scene was initially omitted and was first presented separately in 1907.But the scene is related to the whole drama and is important for appreciating the philosophical implication of the play. Life Force with Tanner is dormant. However, he has been ?selected by Nature to carry on the work of building up an intellectual consciousness of her own instinctive purpose?. The Life Force manifests itself through Ann. The mother-woman pursues and wins the heart of the artist-man. The deep, thought-provoking Life Force exemplified by Ann selectively seeks the advancement of Species. In the ?Don Juan in Hell? scene Shaw explains his theory of Life Force. Life Force heads towards self-consciousness, self-comprehension. Increased command over himself is essential to man?s progress. Tanner?s defeat is that of Pirandello?Life Force with him is unconscious. But Don Juan?s triumph is Shavian. Here, Life Force is self-conscious. Shaw foresees evolution as advancing towards a Superior Mankind when Man will come at the helm of Creation by taking up its rudder. Dr.KETAKI DATTA
