Anil's Ghost
(Michael Ondaatje)
Canadian writer Michael Ondaatje achieved international recognition through the success of the film adaptation of his 1992 novel, The English Patient. In the national bestseller Anil's Ghost, Ondaatjecreates a realistic and riveting account of post-war Sri Lanka. Anil?s Ghost is rich with imagery that captures the imagination and takes readers on a mystical journey through a war ridden countryside. Very few writers handle the subject matter of a post-war devistated landscape with such mystical and elegant narrative prose. The novel traces young forensic anthropologist Anil Tissera?s journey back to her home country- the post-war Sri Lanka, after 15 years. It is a fictional account of the period from 1980 to 1990 where she investigates several human rights violations and investigates numerous killings and other atrocities that have surfaced from all sides. She works with local officials to uncover the causes of large-scale, organized campaigns of murder which scarred the island. It describes the changes that occurred in the country and draws on personal experiences of personal suffering and woe. It is difficult for the author to reconsile the Sri Lanka that he once knew with the Sri Lanka of today. Anil uncovers bodies and skeletons, investigating them in intricate detail to discover the causes of the deaths. The novel traces the public struggle as well as personal turmoil through these events and adresses issues such as questions of history, culture, identity and nationality masterfully. It is a dark and mysterious novel, which attempts to uncover the truth of what really happened in Sri Lanka, gripping the reader and engaging through detail which is handled with intricacy and delicacy. It fundamentally questions what truth is, and how truth can be read as best as possible from natural and human-like artifacts such as bodies, skeletons and land. Ondaatje links seemingly disparate things into a coherent and successful whole.
